The Reverso Tourbillon of the first series is a stunning fusion of timeless design and exceptional horological craftsmanship. The reference 270.240.682 was introduced in 1993 as the first of three complications (followed by a minute repeater in 1994 and a column-wheel chronograph in 1996) in rose gold, and was limited to only 500 pieces worldwide. From the front, the watch presents a subtle elegance, concealing the Caliber 828 behind a finely guilloché and polished silver dial with blued hands. The only clue to the complexity within is the word “Tourbillon” above the off-center seconds subdial. When the case is flipped over, the true artistry of watchmaking is revealed through the sapphire crystal case back, showcasing the movement in all its intricate beauty.
The in-house Caliber 828 consists of 194 individual parts, housing a minute tourbillon. Remarkably, the entire tourbillon mechanism weighs just 0.25 grams, despite its 70 components. Positioned at the top right of the movement is a fan-shaped power reserve indicator, which shows a power reserve of 45 hours. Every component of the movement is meticulously hand-finished. A particularly challenging aspect of the design and construction was adapting the movement to fit the rectangular shape of the case, ensuring that the movement’s form matched the unique design of the watch. This watch is a true testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s mastery of the art of watchmaking, blending tradition with innovation in a truly exceptional timepiece.
